Happy Earth Day 2023!

We are excited to announce our new research lab: the Carbon Accounting, Reporting, and Management Lab (CARML). CARML was established to advance the practice of greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting, explore cutting edge climate and GHG management research, and provide exceptional learning opportunities for the next generation of climate professionals. Dr. Debbie Huntzinger (a Professor in NAU’s School of Earth and Sustainability) and Brandon McNamara (a PhD student in Earth Sciences and Environmental Sustainability) co-founded CARML. Debbie and Brandon each bring a diverse background in carbon accounting and climate science to the table. By merging work in applied research, professional development, and technical services, CARML aims to accelerate climate action and support sustainable communities here in Flagstaff and around the world.

As a research lab, CARML focuses on the nexus of climate change, carbon cycling, and GHG management. An ongoing research project, called Polar Explorer, helps expose and educate students on the ways in which climate warming is transforming the Arctic, and how this transformation threatens infrastructure and could accelerate global climate change. Dr. Huntzinger and her Ph.D. student Jeralyn Poe are also working with collaborators from around the world on improving models to better simulate terrestrial carbon dynamics across the Arctic as climate continues to warm. CARML is also involved in researching best practices in scope 3 GHG accounting and applying novel methodologies for improving scope 3 GHG inventories. Given the scale and challenges imposed by climate change, there is a strong and growing need for professionals with robust skills in tracking, reporting, and managing GHG emissions from companies and organizations. CARML and the School of Earth and Sustainability at NAU offer one of a kind, in-depth professional training in GHG Accounting with pathways for both working professionals and existing students. The business case for hiring GHG accountants grows stronger every day, meaning new career opportunities in the sustainability space. With the educational programs offered by CARML and NAU, professionals will hone their skills in GHG management and learn to speak the language of sustainability.

CARML also provides professional services to companies and organizations around a variety of GHG accounting needs. Often the first steps towards a comprehensive GHG inventory are intimidating and uncertain. CARML has designed streamlined tools and procedures to make GHG accounting and management easier. Whether an organization wants to develop their very first GHG inventory, assess scope 3 emissions, or calculate custom project/product inventories, CARML is well positioned to provide this support. You can contact CARML directly to learn more about these services.

The UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, recently made the following remarks at the launch of the latest IPCC assessment report: “In short, our world needs climate action on all fronts — everything, everywhere, all at once.” Through innovative research initiatives, experiential educational programs, and professional services, CARML is working to meet this call to action. If you are interested in learning more about the lab, take a look at our web page or contact us directly.
